Alright, here’s an assignment for all you kids who say racism is over and the n-word is just another word. Please read through this post and explain the tweets. If you have a short attention span and you can’t bear to read through the exposition before the tweets, in summary, the Seahawks won last night, and in the grand tradition of talking smack after the game, Richard Sherman gave an animated, boastful post-game interview. Twitter responded the best way they know how.
This is a great post. On the one hand, it talks about the evolution of a word. On the other hand, every time I see the n-word it’s like someone slapped me in the face. Or slapped someone else in the face too.
Note well: Racism is not over. The n-word is not just another collection of sounds.
(You can read the first part here, or just jump right on in.)
The most frustrating kind of debate about race is one with an intelligent, well-read white person who isn’t a racist, but still doesn’t “get” it. If you’re a racist, you’re easy to brush aside. If you’re ignorant, I can teach you things. But if you read things and those things didn’t affect your worldview, there’s really nothing about my experience that will change your mindset. However, that doesn’t invalidate the way I feel, and that is the most frustrating part of the conversation: Just because you don’t understand my feelings doesn’t render them invalid.
This is a great post; read the first part too: link’s in the first line.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Walking down the road, minding his own business, one First Coast man says he was assaulted by a Police Officer and thrown in jail for no reason.
When he was tried for the crime, a judge threw out the case half way through the trial.
In case you were wondering from the snippet, of course he was black. What else would he be? This is Florida.
This is a horrible read. Until everyone is free from the fear of unreasonable stops by the constabulary, no one is free.
Read that title again and really let it sink in.
Cops go to the WRONG HOUSE and kill a 72-year-old man.
This sounds a lot like the Delma Towler story, where an 83-year-old woman was shot by the cops. Is it open season on innocent old people? Are our police forces so incompetent that they shoot-to-kill at anything that looks remotely dangerous?
Yes. And also — blunt and harsh statement coming — those old people would probably still be alive if they hadn’t been waving a gun around.
Interesting and very astute take on the cops-shooting-innocent-civilians question.
Stop everything you’re doing and watch this right now. Trust me.
This is priceless!
I know, big shocker right? I’m not really writing for straight men either, in case you needed me to make that plain as well.
Some recent events have made me reflect on how I’m perceived on the internet versus how I am in real life and I just want to put a few things down about my perspective on “blogging” or whatever it is I do over here in this corner of the internet.
This is a great blog post. Summarises what I’ve read, marked, learned, and inwardly digested for 25 years now.
Y’all. My omelettes be comin’ out perfect every single time now so I just wanted to share the good news and give you the play by play in case all of your omelette attempts basically end up as scrambled eggs.
Great cooking post! If only I had a broiler I could do this too…
You know how Republicans reaaaaalllly wanted to win the last Presidential Election? Remember how after they lost, everybody was all dang, I guess we are a lil too crazy, a lil too old, a lil too bigoted, a lil too GodThisNThat? Have you seen all the news clips touting a softer, more moderate Republican party that should be showing up any minute now?
Well. Not Today! Rachel Maddow ripped Virginia a new one last week because those batshit candidates are even worse than the ones that we all hated before.
This is juicy reading.
